Simeis 57 is called the Propeller Nebula. It is an area of brighter emission and dark absorption nebulosity in a larger field of glowing red hydrogen-alpha nebulosity.

The Propeller nebula is located 4 degrees to the northwest of Sadr (Gamma Cygni), the heart of the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan.

The northern arm of the Propeller nebula is cataloged as DWB 119 and the southern arm as DWB 119. The DWB catalog was compiled in 1968 by H. R. Dickel, H. Wendker and J. H. Bieritz. 193 objects were listed in their study of Hydrogen-alpha emission nebulae in the Cygnus-X region.

The distance to Simeis 57 is currently unknown, but it is thought to be relatively near.
