Omicron 1 Cygni, in the constellation of Cygnus, is one of the most beautifully colored triple stars in the sky. It is comprised of a red, a white and a blue star. Hold your mouse cursor over the image above to see identifications.

Omicron 1 Cygni is also known as 31 Cygni. In a telescope, it is the golden-colored. The K-type, magnitude 3.8, red giant lies at a distance of 1,350 light-years.

334 arcseconds to the northwest of 31 Cygni, at a position angle of 325° lies 30 Cygni, a spectral class A-type star that appears white and shines at magnitude 4.8 and that is located 717 light-years away.

The third star lies 107 arcseconds to the south at a position angle of 174°. It is designated as HD 192579. This star is a 7th magnitude B-type star with a distinctly blue color that is located 1,717 light-years away.

The Omicron 1 Cygni triple star is not a true gravitationally interacting system, it is just a chance alignment in the sky.
