The image of Jupiter seen in Figure 1 can be improved with a High-Pass Filtered Layer.

• Go to Window > Layers to open the Layers Palette (Figure 2).

• Drag the background layer to the Create a New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette. (Figure 2).

• Click on the Background Copy layer to make it active.

• From the Blending Mode drop-down menu, select Soft Light as the mode (Figure 3, Number 1).

• Go to Filter > Other > High Pass (Figure 4).

• Adjust the Radius slider to enhance the image based on the scale of the details. A lower radius will adjust smaller details, and a larger radius will adjust large-scale details (Figure 4, Number 1).

• Finally, flatten the image to apply the high-pass sharpened soft-light layer permanently. Go to Layer > Flatten Image.

In Figure 5 we can see the results of using a High-Pass Filtered Soft-Light Layer to enhance details on Jupiter.

The blending mode of the layer can also be changed to Overlay or Hard Light for different effects with the High-Pass Filtered image.

You can also try applying a High-Pass Filtered Layer more than once with the radius set to different amounts.

Note that the High-Pass Filtered Layer can also exaggerate noise in the image.
