Open Cluster NGC 6939 (lower right) and galaxy NGC 6946 (upper left) are located just 40 arcminutes apart in the sky and 2 degrees southwest of Eta Cephei.

NGC 6939 is an open cluster located inside of our own galaxy at a distance of approximately 5,800 light-years.

NGC 6946 is an entirely separate galaxy that is located 10 million light-years away.

It is just by coincidence that these two objects lie close to each other in the same line of sight. NGC 6939 is located in the constellation of Cepheus.

NGC 6939's total brightness is magnitude 7.8 and it contains 80 stars in its 10 arc-minute diameter. Its brightest member is 12th magnitude.

NGC 6946 and NGC 6939 were both discovered by William Herschel in 1798.

North is to the top in the above image.
