Messier 109 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Ursa Major, 38 arcminutes southeast of Phecda (Gamma Ursae Majoris).

M109 is classified as a Hubble-type SBc spiral. It is at a distance of 55 million to 117 million light-years and has an apparent size of 7.5 by 4.4 arcminutes.

M109 is part of the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster which contains 79 galaxies cataloged by Brent Tully in 1996.

M109 was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781.
