Barnard 72 is the Snake, or "S" dark nebula in Ophiuchus.

Below and to the right of the Snake is B68, an extremely dense dark nebula, and to the lower left of it are B69, B70, B71 and B74. B77 is the large dark area at the lower left in the frame.

B72 is located 650 light-years away.

The brightest star in the frame is 44 Ophiuchi, shining at magnitude 4.16, at lower left.

B72 was cataloged by E. E. Barnard in 1919.

North is to the lower left in the above image.
