Jerry Lodriguss was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He now lives in suburban Philadelphia. He studied journalism at Louisiana State University and film at the University of New Orleans where he graduated with a degree in communications. He first became interested in astronomy at the age of seven when he looked through a "spyglass" at the Moon and was amazed to see that it had craters. He discovered his love for photography when he was 17 when he bought a camera to take pictures through his home-made 10-inch reflecting telescope. His professional career began in 1974 working part time shooting high school sports for $5 per picture at a small suburban weekly newspaper. He then worked as a staff photographer for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, and as Louisiana News Pictures Bureau Manager for United Press International. He has freelanced for Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. For more than 20 years he worked as the staff sports photographer at the Philadelphia Inquirer where he was nominated for three Pulitzer prizes. He has covered national and international sporting events including three Olympics, and various Super Bowls, World Series, and NBA and NCAA basketball championships. He has won numerous sports photography awards including first place prizes for both feature, action and photograph of the year in the National Football League Hall of Fame Contest. He has twice won first place honors for Sports Portfolio in the prestigious NPPA / University of Missouri Pictures of the Year competition. His work as been featured many times on NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day, and has been included in exhibits by the National Geographic Society, Space Telescope Science Institute Hubble Heritage Program, Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum, American Museum of Natural History, and in the book: Through the Lens: National Geographic's Greatest Photographs. Lodriguss' astronomical photographs of objects such as nebulae and galaxies have appeared in books and magazines all over the world. He is recognized as an expert in the field of DSLR astrophotography and the digital enhancement and correction of deep-sky color astrophotographs.
