Formula 14 Visual Guiding Magnification
GM = ISFL / 5
Where:
- GM is the Guidescope Magnification needed
- ISFL is the Imaging Scope's Focal Length
Example: What guiding magnification is needed for an imaging scope with a focal length of 1040mm and a 90mm f/10 guidescope with 900mm of focal length?
GM = ISFL / 5
GM = 1016 / 5
GM = 203x
To achieve 203x magnification in a 900mm focal length guidescope, about a 4.4mm guiding eyepiece is necessary. This can easily be achieved with a standard 12.5mm guiding eyepiece and a 3x Barlow. This would give 4.1mm of effective focal length in the eyepiece and a power of 219x.
