Pixel Size Back | Up | Next

If you know the size of your sensor, and the number of pixels in it, you can easily calculate the size of each individual pixel.

Formula 11    Pixel Size

PS = 1 / ((NP / LD)/1000)

Where:

  • PS is Pixel Size in microns
  • NP is the Number of Pixels on one side of the sensor
  • LD is the size of that one side of the sensor in millimeters
  • 1000 is the number of microns in a millimeter

Example: What is the size of a pixel in the Canon 20Da camera that has a 22.5mm x 15mm sensor with 3504 x 2336 pixels.

Since the pixels are square, we only need to work with one dimension. Let's use the 22.5mm side with 3504 pixels.

PS = 1 / [(NP / LD)/1000]
PS = 1 / [(3504 / 22.5)/1000]
PS = 1 / [(155.73)/1000]
PS = 1/ 0.15573
PS = 6.4 microns

There are 3504 pixels in 22.5 millimeters, so each pixel is 6.4 microns on a side.
