This large interesting region is located on the border of the constellations of Taurus and Perseus. Hold your mouse cursor over the image to see object identifications.
Covering about 31 x 21 degrees, this wide-angle image shows a complex of bright red emission nebulae, star clusters, blue reflection nebulosity, and complex dark nebulae including the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC).
This image represents the longest amount of exposure that I have put into a single image. The faint detail in this image is very faint and requires long exposure to record it. Also, the image was shot at a reasonably dark observing site, but not as dark as it could have been. Brighter skies require longer exposures to make faint stuff visible.
Because clear skies are not that abundant in my part of the country, I decided to shoot this area with two cameras simultaneously over the course of two nights. That allowed me to shoot 3 hours each night when the area was high enough to image, and gave me a total of twelve hours of exposure in just six hours total.
