Solar Prominence

A giant prominence arches above the chromosphere on the edge of the Sun in this hydrogen-alpha image.

The visible surface of the Sun that emits light is called the photosphere. In hydrogen-alpha light however, we are looking at the chromosphere, a region above the photosphere.
